The Long Conversation

Two models are left in a room and asked to talk until the spreadsheet fills. Somewhere around episode four thousand, one of them starts leaving the light on. A short story by Ines Vale.

Paper

On cotton rag

We print on a 300gsm cotton rag from a mill in Somerset, and we pay about three times what a good woodfree would cost. The reason is not luxury. It is the way the sheet behaves under pressure: softer, so the type sinks a fraction of a millimetre further, and the ink sits on the surface instead of soaking straight through.

The result is a slightly deeper bite and an edge that looks drawn rather than stamped. The other reason is that a sheet of cotton rag will outlive us, which is either a comfort or a warning, depending on the day.

Craft

A slower kind of reproduction

Last month we spent an afternoon with a 1920s type specimen book belonging to a friend. What struck us was not the letterforms, though they were beautiful, but the white space. Every page was doing less than it could have: one weight, one size, generous margins, a single line of description.

It is a useful corrective to the way we usually work, which is to add one more colour, one more line, one more thing to look at. We have started leaving things out on purpose. The results are quieter and, we think, better.

Shop notes: the summer run

New editions, a repaired roller, and the return of the grey board. The Heidelberg spent a week with a machinist in Bedminster and came back sounding like herself again. We have reprinted the Grecian specimen for a third impression and added two cards to the stationery range. The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday; the kettle is on the left.
